Confucian Entrepreneurship’ (Rushang) is a compound concept embracing humanistic tradition (儒) and business dynamism (商); the ideal 21st-century ‘Confucian entrepreneur’
the Confucian Economic Sphere, from Zi Gong in pre-Qin times to Liu Xiangshan and his Song-Ming peers, right down to Zhang Jian, Shibusawa Eiichi and Tan Kah Kee in the modern era. In a century of unprecedented international economic development driven increasingly by East Asia, the concept of Confucian Entrepreneurship assumes a global significance.
Confucian scholar Tu Weiming regards the Rushang ideal as one of concern for the broader political, social and cultural health of the society in which commercial endeavours can flourish. Such 'entrepreneur-intellectuals' display obvious justice and benevolence in their business dealings: 'Human beings at their best are more than rational self-maximisers; they seek intrinsic meaning in their activities.'
