Date:2014-05-19

At 7 P.M. of June 19th, the Director of IAHS, Prof. Tu Weiming, accepting the invitation of the Rothschild Foundation’s Chairman Lord Rothschild, gave a speech in honor of Henry Kissenger’s 90th birthday. The event was held at the Royal College of Art in London, where Prof. Tu presented his understanding of civilizational dialogue and cultural pluralism. In his speech, Director Tu Weiming explained his concept of “Spiritual Humanism” and expressed the possibility that this concept might become the salient feature of 21st century culture, offering a shared global framework, and even a common measure for the harmonious relations of all humanity. “Spiritual Humanism” respects cultural difference, praises the diversity of religions, and expands the dialogue between nations. Prof. Tu noted that in a globalized world, lacking an understanding of cultural pluralism will lead to cultural misunderstandings and these in turn can increase friction between different countries. After the speech, Henry Kissinger expressed his admiration for Prof. Tu’s words. In total, 200 international luminaries and friends of Kissinger were on hand to participate in the event.
