On the morning of Nov. 23, 2015, Professor Zhicheng Chai held a small academic seminar at IAHS.Professor Zhicheng Chai is Professor Tu Weiming's student; at the seminar, Professor Chai first briefly introduced his paper "Mou Zongsan's Hu Shi", and he pointed out that although in the Mou Zongsan’s criticism, there were personal feelings, it still reflects a group of new Confucianists advocates’ passion for our culture, and also shows their standpoints towards “5.4” tradition in the 20th century, like Hu shi.
After Chai’s lecture, teacher Lu Yin and Phd student Wu Ruihan respectively discussed with Professor Chai about the different minds of people in Ming-qing Dynasty before and after the liberation, and about the American pragmatism traditions. In the course of discussion, Professor Chai mentioned that at that time, Chen Yinque insisted to head to Guangzhou, instead of Taiwan. In order to let Fu Sinian believe him, he threw a box of bricks and old newspapers to Fu Sinian and lied to him he will come back later. While the Neo-confucianist Xiong, Liang, Feng and Ma Yifu chose to stay in Mainland, because they prefer to face Chinese culture, rather than alien culture. So these all show they stick to Chinese culture. In addition, Xiong’s education style is special, because he always roared to Mou Sanzong, and as a common people, he dared to slap the major general Xu Fuguan (Kuomintang), but curiously, the latter one was sincerely convinced, and then Xu abandoned weapons and treated Xiong as his teacher. Professor Chai also points out that the Zen’s education pattern had more luck while Hu shi was really refined and cultured, so his teaching method is more adapt to the trend of the times. Short but beneficial, after the discussion, everyone felt that they have learnt a lot from Professor Chai’ seminar.
