Professor Ni's new book, Understanding the Analects of Confucius, A New Translation of Lunyu with Annotations has just been published by State University of New York Press. This work of 508 printed pages offers so far up to today the most detailed annotations of the Confucian classic in the English world. In order to avoid the common problem of imbedding interpretations into the translation, Ni's version retains the original ambiguity whenever possible, and lists alternative interpretations of each passage in the annotations, sometimes with his own comments. In this way, he is able to be both faithful to the original text, and at the same time presenting it as a living document constantly unfolding its meanings in two thousand years of commentarial tradition, and inviting today's readers to join the ongoing conversation.
