At Prof. Du Weiming’s invitation, Prof. Ghola mreza Aavani, the former Dean of the Iranian Institute of Philosophy and the former President of the International Society for Islamic Philosophy (ISIP), will again serve as the Chair Professor of the “Kenan Rifai Islamic Study Lecture” program of IAHS at the Fall Semester of 2015. Welcome to attend Lecture Series on “Introduction to The Ringstone of the Wisdom by Ibn al-Arabi” which will be held in succession throughout this semester!

Attachment: Introduction to Prof. Ghola mreza Aavani: Born in 1943 in Iran, Prof. Aavani obtained a doctor’s degree in philosophy from University of Tehran in 1976. Currently serving as the Director of Iranian Iranian Philosophical Society (IPS), Prof. Aavani is also the Chairman of International Society for Islamic Philosophy (ISIP), Chair Professor and former Dean of he Iranian Institute of Philosophy in western philosophy, as well as the full-time professor of Shahid Beheshti University. Prof. Aavani is proficient in many languages including Farsi, Arabic, English and French and skillful in reading writings in Greek (both ancient and Modern Greek), Latin and German. Specialized in the study of islamic philosophy, Prof. Aavani has is the author of multiple books including Philosophy and Spiritual Art (Hekmat-o Honar-e Ma’navi, Grous Publications, 1976). Prof. Aavani visited Peking University as the Chair Professor of the “Kenan Rifai Islamic Study Lecture” program at the Fall Semester of 2015.

Course introduction: Ibn al-Arabi is known as the father of the philosophical tradition of Sufism which is well-known in the islamic world. He has written more than 200 books and articles on this theme. Magnum opus, Fusus al-hikam, or, The Ringstone of the Wisdom, a book about the commentary on the wisdom of 27 Great Prophets referred to in the Quran, surpassed his other works and became a core concern of the public shortly after he finished it. There are more than 300 comments in this book. Through treating lots of wisdom-related things from a new perspective, this valuable book provides many solutions for the problems of existentialism and epistemology confronted by humanism. In this course, we will deal with the central topics and issues of this book and explore their importance to the understanding of the world outlook of Ibn al-Arabi.
